Presentation
The architecture of the city is another example of the Languedoc circular layout. The medieval centre was built around the château Riquet, mentioned as early as 975. The fortified gates, the ramparts, the bell tower, the “studium”, Saint-Géniés church (11th and 14th centuries), and the penitents’ chapel (17th century) are part of a rich historical heritage that you will enjoy visiting.
On the way out of the village, in the middle of the scrubland, lies the heritage’s gem: Saint-Félix-deMontceau abbey (11th and 13th centuries). In summer, concerts and cultural and festive events contribute towards its revival and reputation. In front of the Abbey, you can recharge your batteries in the picnic area before going for a walk, bike or donkey ride along the marked footpaths through the Massif de la Gardiole. This walk has some exceptional views of the Bassin de Thau and the entire coastline.
Gigean’s festivals include the street festival “Chapeau les Artistes”, which takes place every year in mid-July in the circular-built area of town, and an interesting donkey fair.
